My Bible Says…What the Bible Really Teaches about Family Values – Pastor Ryan Grace My home is a crazy place. With a 2-year-old, a 10-yearold, a 15-year-old, and an 18-year-old, there is no shortage of dramatic situations. But I know the craziness of life doesn’t only affect families of six–all households have circumstances that get out of control. So it doesn’t come as a shock to me when people ask, ”How can a person teach good family values?” Even though this is a common question, it’s a difficult question to answer. The reason it is hard is because there are so many things beyond our control. We can try to teach people to have good values, but that does not mean our friends, family members, spouses, or children will listen (especially when they’re teenagers!). Furthermore, sometimes we ourselves are not completely sure what to do with the situations we find ourselves in. Life has a way of getting messy; and despite our best efforts, all households experience various kinds of brokenness. So, this October I’m going to take on some of the tough questions that come up about family values: questions about marriage, about abuse, and about abortion. We will study the Bible; we will look at United Methodist teachings; and I will reflect on some of my own experiences. I definitely don’t have all the answers…but we will consider what it means to have Family Values.
