The people of the U.S. take great pride in our sense of rugged individualism. This belief in hard work and self-reliance challenges us to employ our skills to good use, and to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to make our way in the world. While these values are very positive, sometimes we get a little carried away with the idea that we have built our lives by ourselves.
The United Methodist Church teaches people to do everything in their power to care for themselves and their families…but we also teach that our power ultimately comes from God. This is an important lesson to keep in mind, because forgetting God’s work in our lives can lead to both pride and greed.
So this November we will explore the American spirit of hard work, as well as the Christian belief that even the ability to work hard is a gift from God. Together, these values will call us to earn all we can, save all we can, and give all we can to build God’s kingdom here. We invite you to join us for worship this November as we discuss Rugged Individualism.
